I Got A DUI in San Diego, What Should I Do Now?

The First Thing You Should Do If You Were Arrested For A DUI

Call a lawyer.  Do not procrastinate on this one.  The sooner a lawyer is involved, the more likely you are to have better case results. With an experienced DUI lawyer, it is likely you can minimize or avoid penalties associated with the crime. If you were arrested for driving under the influence, you’ll likely be facing jail time, license suspension, large fines, and future consequences. Qualified DUI attorneys can make a difference in the case and in your future.

What Should I Know About Choosing A DUI Attorney?

There are a few things you should know when it comes to choosing the right attorney for your case. There are many types of lawyers, and if you’ve been arrested with a DUI, you will want to hire a criminal defense attorney who has had experience with drunk driving cases. It is also important to hire someone who has experience in the court where your case is pending. Each court has small differences, and it makes a big difference if a lawyer knows how to act in each courtroom. If you have been arrested in San Diego, Bradley Corbett is an experienced DUI lawyer who has won cases in every courtroom in the area.

What Questions Should I Ask A DUI Lawyer?

When you are searching to find a lawyer for your case, most attorney’s have free consultations where you can meet with them and ask questions.  Before you meet with any lawyer do your research.  Have a list of questions to ask them so you know more about how you would interact with the lawyer. Here are a few questions to get you started. How many of the cases you handle are DUI cases?  How much of my case will you handle yourself? How many cases like mine have you handled, and what have been the outcomes of those cases? What are your attorney’s fees, and how are they calculated?

A Short History of Drunk Driving

Since 1910, the United States has had laws about drunk driving. It wasn’t until about 1980 when they started to become stricter and harsher. This was the year that Mothers Against Drunk Drivers was founded.  MADD was founded by Candy Lightner after her young daughter was killed by a drunk driver.  The drunk driver had previously been charged with 3 DUI’s and was out on bail for a hit-and-run arrest from 2 days earlier. Her passion for stricter laws united many people together to fight for more DUI laws. At the time MADD was founded, more than 21,000 people were killed in drunk driving accidents each year. The group fought for tougher legislation for the convicted of a DUI. They helped shape the public opinion of driving under the influence. In 1984 the legal drinking age was raised to 21, and in 2000, Congress passed the national illegal limit for impaired driving at .08 BAC. Previously the limit was 0.15.
